"Formative Assessments is a planned activity, usually for the entire class or group of students, that has a specifics sequence of activities. Student knowledge and understanding is assessed, and the results are used by teachers to give feedback and plan instruction." (McMillan, 2014)

Fluency TutorAfter reading the article Fantastic, Fast Formative Assessment Tools by Vicki Davis on Edutopia, I became very excited about an app called Fluency Tutor. After checking it out, I can't wait to try it out in the classroom!
Currently I spend a little of my classroom time having students test themselves with reading fluency but to be honest I don't get to hear everyone to effectively assess who needs help and who needs more advance and challenging reading. What I love about this app is that the students record their voice reading the passage and they can do it as many times as they want before they submit it for grading. It is also not just about fluency because it also has four questions for reading comprehension as well. Students get feedback from the app as well, so they are able to see how they did and what they need to work on. What is advertised on their website is that "teachers can listen to students’ recordings wherever and whenever it's convenient, giving quick feedback or a more in-depth assessment of reading progress. By collecting data over time, Fluency Tutor for Google helps teachers build a clear picture of each student's progress throughout the school year." (Texthelp, 2015) Although I love a free website this one is only free for the trial period of 30 days. I think this app is great especially for those who struggle to read and don't want others to hear them. It could also work well with ELL students. |
Socrative
|
What is great about Socrative is that not only will it give you all the options on creating a quiz, but it also has something it calls space race which is like a Kahoot quiz game (which I have commented on previously) the only difference is that it is not timed. I especially appreciate that it provides an exit ticket for students as well. I currently have one created on google forms, but having it on Socrative is easier to see student responses over time.

Formative
This is not only the title of this page but it is also a website that is handy to use for technology based formative assessments. How Formative works is its kind of like Nearpod (which I have used before and have previously talked about in another page) where you have access to student work where they can draw, write, and answer questions in real time that can be pulled up on your screen when they are answering questions.(Davis, 2015) What is awesome about the website is you have the ability to upload PDFs to the site and have students answer questions about that document. (goformative, 2017)That saves on photocopying pages if you only have one resource, to give to every student and then collect and grade. Not only that but the assignments are kept in one place and we as teachers don't have to try and recreate the resource we have just to post it online.
Formative also has a drop down menu that specifically is for tracker students progress aptly named tracker. Here you can view student progress over the assignments completed and with a percentage of how accurate they completed each task. I also like that you can have it post to google classroom as that is what students currently use.
Although the site is called formative and I would use it for just that reason, you could also just as easily post a summative assignment on there for students to complete since you are essentially creating quizzes, which could easily be a summative test.
