It is the use of technology and service in order to support which aid those student who need help due to a disability. (Infobase, 2009) In general this technology is used in order for students to be capable of integrating into the mainstream general education. As seen in previous pages the use of technology to facilitate learning is yet another way to differentiate learning in order to take into account all students in the classroom.
Under the umbrella of assistive technology the following things are looked at:
-evaluation of whether they need it or what they need
-getting the technology support they need
-placing them and using them in the classroom and assisting at home

Reading SupportSome problems that may occur are:
-reading text books or information online -understanding context clues or decoding text -comprehension (Infobase, 2009) Bookshare

Auditory SupportSome problems that may occur are:
-unable to follow verbal directions and cues -comprehension -story term memory (Infobase, 2009) FM systemsWhat they are are devices that transmit sound from teacher to student. The teacher has a device on that is connected to the device that the student wears, usually in the ear.

"Increased availability and usage of FM systems are due in large measure to legislation that mandates access to technology for persons with hearing and other communication disabilities: the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act. Under IDEA, consideration of assistive technology for any child with a disability must take place as part of the development of the individualized education program. Each act in some way deals with the issue of access to instruction." (ASL, 201) For more reading:

Writing and physical support
Some problems that may occur are:
-organization of notes or assignments -clear definable writing -language structure such as grammar and spelling (Infobase, 2009) |
Speech to textAbove text to speech was mentioned as a way to help those with reading disabilities but the reverse speech to text can help with writing and fine motor skills because it does not require you to use a computer keyboard. Below are some of the programs that aid in this:
-Speechnotes speechnotes.co/ "speaking instead of typing, enables you to think and speak it out fluently, uninterrupted, which again encourages creative, clear thinking. " -Dictation dictation.io/ -TalkTyper talktyper.com/ -SpeechTexter www.speechtexter.com/# |
The best use of of assistive technology is that it provides support with cost effective, reliable, minimized tech and easy to put into the general education classroom. (Infobase, 2009)
Benefits of this is:
-students don't stick out as different to those of there peer, which make them more confident and comfortable being in a gen ed class.
-teachers do not have to spend tons of training time on the technology allowing more time on how to integrate into the classroom to support the student's learning.
